National Photographic Portrait Prize 2022

National Photographic Portrait Prize 2022: a travelling exhibition from the National Portrait Gallery, Canberra | 28 January - 1 April 2023. Ticketed.

The David Roche Foundation is delighted to be the first venue for the National Photographic Portrait Prize 2022. Now in its 15th year, the annual exhibition held at the National Portrait Gallery, Canberra, draws from entries submitted by aspiring and professional photographers from across Australia. In 2022, 50 finalists were selected from more than 2,400 entries.

Sandra Bruce, Director of Collection and Exhibitions at the National Portrait Gallery said the National Photographic Portrait Prize never fails to deliver a range of emotions. “Australia is a country with myriad faces, and as we continue to live in disruptive times, the NPPP offers a sweeping view across the nation’s experience, one that reminds us that our lives continue on regardless of wider circumstances.”

Wayne Quilliam’s portrait Silent Strength 2021, depicting Aurukun man Eric Yunkaporta in ceremonial head-wear, won the $50,000 NPPP 2022. Luther Cora’s Flora and Fauna, Giara: White Cockatoo 2021 won the $5,000 People’s Choice Award sponsored by our very own, David Roche Foundation. Adam Ferguson won the Highly Commended prize and The Art Handlers’ award recipient was Adam Haddrick.
