Reading Japanese Art

A talk by Dr Jennifer Harris | Thursday 13 December 4.00 PM

The David Roche Foundation is pleased to announce a new addition to our special events for Edo Style: Art of Japan with a talk by Dr Jennifer Harris.

The Edo period continued the long established tradition of valuing calligraphy above all other art forms. The Japanese writing  scripts adorn scrolls, paintings, woodblock prints, netsuke, ceramics as well as sword furniture. With reference to works of art displayed in the Edo Style exhibition, this session will consider the fundamentals of the writing scripts, calligraphic styles as well as seals, signatures and system of dating the year in which objects were made.

Dr Jennifer Harris is an expert on Japanese art, culture and language of the Edo period, and is a regular guest speaker on Japanese art at forums across Australia. Her 2014 exhibition publication, Netsuke and other miniatures, is the definitive study on the netsuke collection of the Art Gallery of South Australia.
